A Successful 50th

A Message for 2069: Cheakamus Centre Celebrates 50th with Time Capsule

In January 2019, we began celebrating our 50th anniversary, and with that, we launched the 50 years – 50 faces campaign – a celebration of individuals who have been part of an extraordinary journey that spans five decades. We collected stories and memories from our Cheakamus community over the past decades and featured them monthly on our website and social media channels.

On December 6, 2019, as part of wrapping up our 50-year celebrations, we hosted a celebration event where we buried a time capsule that will be opened in the year 2069 by students of the future. North Vancouver School District students participating in the grade 6 Outdoor School program from Upper Lynn Valley Elementary School and Queen Mary Elementary School contributed hand-written reflections of their experiences at Cheakamus Centre for the time capsule. Also included were letters from: North Vancouver School District's Board of Education Board Chair and Superintendent/CEO, BC's Minister of Education, Cheakamus Centre's (formerly known as North Vancouver Outdoor School) original founder, and so many more!

Reporter Keili Bartlett from the Squamish Chief was on site to capture this momentous occasion. Read the full article here.
